Former Indianapolis Attorney Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud
$4.5M Wire Fraud Involving Personal Injury Clients
William Conour, a once-prominent construction and accident attorney in Indianapolis, pleaded guilty to federal wire fraud charges before United States District Judge Richard Young. Conour, 66, has been held at Marion County Jail since June 27 after violating bond terms by divesting assets that had been designated for victim compensation.
In U.S. District Court, Conour admitted to misusing client settlement funds—often belonging to vulnerable victims such as widows, orphans, and individuals with long-term care needs. Federal prosecutors claim he defrauded at least 25 personal injury clients, diverting more than $4.5 million to cover personal and business expenses.
Legal Fallout: Name Removal and Restitution
Indiana University is reportedly seeking to remove Conour’s name from the atrium of the McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis. A $450,000 donation he made to the university is also being returned to help repay victims of his wire fraud scheme.
Conour is scheduled for sentencing on October 17, where he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Restitution is expected, although victims have yet to declare a specific amount.
