Brookwood Man Sentenced For Wire Fraud

Brookwood Man Sentenced For Wire Fraud:

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, over a two year period Huffman Earl Monk of Brookwood, AL paid over $220,000 in bribes as part of a fraud scheme that resulted in a $1 million loss to the government. Monk was the owner of several brokerage companies that were contracted to ship large freight for the military. He pleaded guilty in January and has been sentenced to five years and three months in a federal prison for wire fraud and paying bribes to a United States Coast Guard transportation officer. The officer was 30-year-old Nathan Allen Dunn who was also from Brookwood.

Dunn was a transportation officer from October 2009 to November 2011 at the Surface Forces Logistics Center in Norfolk. He was in charge of coordinating the shipment of large freight between Coast Guard bases. Prosecutors say that Dunn conspired to award overpriced or fake shipment contracts to 12 companies that were owned by Huffman Monk in exchange for bribery payments. Dunn, who also pleaded guilty to wire fraud and taking bribes, will be sentenced on May 8, 2013.

Huffman Earl Monk, 52, was sentenced on Monday April 29th in a Norfolk federal court and also ordered to pay a $15,000 fine and more than $779,000 in restitution to the United States Treasury Department.
